Use DeskProto to CNC machine your furniture
Download a free DXF file and machine this good-looking stool
DeskProto makes 2D CNC machining very easy: download a DXF design, use the Vector wizard and machine your own seats (DP V7, 9.15 min).
A 2D design can very well be used to create 3D furniture, as illustrated in this CNC tutorial video. DeskProto makes this an easy process: see how we machined some extra seats when we ran short. Just three parts per seat, machined in plywood, following a 2D DXF pattern by CNCrouterdesign.com. On their website you can find many more interesting designs.
We bought this DXF design for USD 4.90, however CNCrouterdesign kindly permitted us to make it a Free download for DeskProto users, so feel free to make your own stool ! You can find the DXF file on the page with Free models.
The video shows the complete process: the design, the complete DeskProto session, machining (on the CNC router of our local FabLab ProtoSpace), assembly and the result. The toolpaths were created using the wizard 'Basic Vector machining', total machining time per seat was 8.5 minutes.
This video applies to all DeskProto editions. However, when using the DeskProto Free edition you need to run the same NC file several times, with different zero points, as the Free edition does not include roughing options.
This DeskProto video is on HD quality (1280x720 pixels).
Subtitles are available and can be switched on, in English and in Dutch.
Before you can use DeskProto you need to Download and install the software.
The basic CNC workflow and the DeskProto wizards are shown in Part 1 of the introduction video.
You can also find information about using DeskProto in the printed or PDF DeskProto Tutorial.
