DeskProto® releases V8.1, including an Inlay wizard.

Utrecht (Netherlands) -- July 6, 2026 -- One of the most satisfying applications of a CNC milling machine is to create wood inlays, by machining a base and a plug that perfectly fit. Creating toolpaths for an inlay was already possible in Version 8.0 of the DeskProto CAM software, still many users asked to make that process easier.

The new Inlay wizard in Version 8.1 offers the easiest process to create inlays on the market:
Select the artwork and the cutters to be used, set the maximum depth and the gap height, that’s all.
The wizard will automatically calculate all settings to create a base and a plug that fit. CNC machined using a V-bit where needed and a flat cutter for the horizontal surfaces.

The new Inlay wizard in DeskProto makes creating inlays very easy.

The image shows a simple inlay: the base in light wood, the plug (which of course needs to be a mirror image) in dark wood, and the result.
"Any hobbyist with a CNC milling machine should create at least one inlay:” says product manager Lex Lennings. "the result will make you feel proud. This new wizard makes it so easy that anyone can do it.”

Other new features in V8.1 include:
  • an option do create dogbone fillets
  • laser engraving of bitmap images on curved surfaces
  • a 4-axis animation in true orientation, so with a rotating part.
