Scan a head with an iPhone and mill a sculpture
Use the iPhone's Face-ID 3D scanner and a 4-axis CNC machine
3D scan someone's head with an iPhone and machine a bust sculpture (DP V7.1, 22.5 min)
In order to CNC machine a sculpture of a living person you need to first obtain a 3D scan of that person. So far that has not been easy, as not many people have a 3D scanner. We found that this is no longer true:
All recent iPhones are equipped with a 3D scanner: its Face ID feature. This video shows how to scan a head, using the EM3D app from the Apple App Store. Next it shows how to create toolpaths for a 4-axis CNC milling machine, using the DeskProto 3D CAM software. Next the milling process is shown: rotary toolpaths in maple wood, and finally the resulting bust sculpture.
Rotation axis machining is possible only in the Multi-Axis edition of DeskProto.
This DeskProto video is on HD quality (1280x720 pixels).
Subtitles are available and can be switched on, in English and in Dutch.
