Rhino / DeskProto Workshop for Model Makers.

For immediate release, May 2002.

Austin, Texas, USA -- May 10, 2002 -- The Association of Professional Model Makers today announced that this year's APMM Conference will include a Rhino / DeskProto CAD/CAM workshop. The tenth APMM Conference is titled "Elements for Success", and will be held on September 20-23, 2001 in Silver Spring MD (near Washington DC). The Conference Website is

CAD/CAM technology certainly belongs to today's model making essentials, which is why the APMM is glad that two major representatives of a new generation of CAD/CAM software will be present at the conference. These new software packages show that professional software does not need to be expensive, and does not need to be complex in use. Rhino is a 3D CAD software package offering complete NURBS based surface modeling on an ordinary Windows PC. DeskProto is an easy-to-use 3D CAM software package aimed at Rapid Prototyping purposes. Both packages are completely independent of each other, still they do create a perfectly matched couple for design and model making applications.

Two one-day workshops are given by Robert McNeel & Associates (Rhino) and Delft Spline Systems (DeskProto) "Rhino / DeskProto 1", resp 2. They offer hands-on experience to learn how easy it is to include CAD/CAM in the design and model making process. Participants will model their own design in Rhino, calculate CNC toolpaths in DeskProto and create a prototype on a CNC milling machine. Techno Isel has offered to bring in some of their desktop CNC machines to make immediate machining possible.

Other activities during this four-day conference will include exciting model shop tours and technical workshops. Friday and Monday will be dedicated days for model shop technical tours to selected premier locations such as the Smithonian OEC Modelshop and Black & Decker / DeWalt. Technical Essential Skills Workshops will be the focus on Saturday and Sunday at the Silver Spring Conference Center. At the Sunday Evening Expo, attendees will enjoy ample time to interact with Vendors who are promoting their company's products and services. Early registration is advised as tours are filling quickly.
